Among Us Keyboard Controls: Full PC Guide
The calculator for this page is switched off while it is checked. The formula is below, and the worked example in the article shows how to use it by hand.
Among Us keyboard controls let you move, report, kill, vent, and complete tasks entirely from the keyboard on PC. You move with WASD or the arrow keys, and most actions use the E, Q, and Spacebar keys. Here is the complete default keybind list, how to change them, and how to fix common control problems.
Default Keyboard Controls
Among Us on PC uses a simple set of keys. The most important are:
- WASD / Arrow Keys – Move your character
- E – Use / Report (interact with buttons, doors, sabotages, and report a dead body when standing over it)
- Q – Kill (when playing as Impostor and near a crewmate)
- Spacebar – Vent (Impostor only, when standing on a vent)
- Tab – Open the task list (or the map in some versions)
- R – Use the emergency meeting button (when near it)
- Esc – Pause menu / close a window
- Enter – Chat (in lobby or during a game)
- Shift – Run (in some versions, holding Shift makes you move faster, but this is not the default in the classic PC build)
These are the defaults for the PC version (Steam, Epic Games, and the Microsoft Store version). Mobile and console versions use touch or controller buttons, not these keys.
How to Change Key Bindings
Among Us does not have an in-game key remapping menu as of the current version (2025). The game uses fixed keybinds for actions. However, you can remap keys using third-party tools or by editing the game’s config file (if you are on PC).
One common method is to use a keyboard remapping program (like AutoHotkey or a gaming keyboard’s software) to swap keys. For example, if you prefer to use F to report instead of E, you can set up a macro that sends E when you press F. This is a workaround, not an official feature.
Another option is to edit the game’s settings file, but as of the latest versions, the game does not expose keybindings in the settings.ini file. The only reliable way is to use external remapping tools.
What Each Key Does (Detailed)
Here is a more detailed breakdown of each key and when to use it:
- E (Use) – This is the context-sensitive action key. It triggers whatever is available: opening a door, pressing a button, calling a sabotage, or reporting a dead body. If you are standing next to a dead body, pressing E will call a meeting. If you are at a sabotage panel, E will start the minigame.
- Q (Kill) – Only works for the Impostor. You must be close enough to a crewmate and the kill cooldown must be ready. Pressing Q will kill the crewmate and start a short animation.
- Spacebar (Vent) – Impostor only. When standing on a vent, pressing Spacebar will make you enter it. Press it again to exit. You can also use the arrow keys to move between vents while inside.
- Tab (Map/ Tasks) – In the original PC version, Tab opens the task list (which shows your tasks and their locations). In some updated versions, Tab toggles the map. If you are a ghost, Tab lets you see the full map and all players.
- R (Emergency Meeting) – When you are near the emergency meeting button in the cafeteria, pressing R will call a meeting. This is a separate key from E, but E also works if you are close enough.
- Enter (Chat) – In the lobby or during a game, pressing Enter opens the chat window. Type your message and press Enter again to send. In free play, you can also use chat.
Common Control Problems and Fixes
Players often encounter issues with keyboard controls. Here are the most common problems and how to solve them:
- Keys not responding – Make sure the game window is active (click on it). If you are using a laptop, check that the keyboard is not in “function lock mode. Also, verify that you are not using a controller that might be overriding keyboard input.
- Cannot report dead bodies – You must be standing directly on the body and press E. If you are moving, the prompt may not appear. Stop moving, then press E.
- Vent key not working – You must be an Impostor and stand exactly on the vent. If you are a crewmate, the vent key does nothing. Also, if the vent is sabotaged, you cannot use it.
- Kill key not working – Check that your kill cooldown is over (the button on the bottom right shows a timer). Also, you must be close enough to the target. If you are a ghost, you cannot kill.
- Chat not opening – Press Enter. If you are in a game, you can only chat during meetings or when dead (as a ghost). In the lobby, chat is always available.
Keyboard vs. Controller vs. Mobile
Among Us is available on PC, mobile, and consoles. The controls differ significantly:
- PC (keyboard) – As described above, using WASD and E/Q/Spacebar. This is generally considered the most precise for movement and quick actions.
- Mobile (touch) – Use a virtual joystick on the left side of the screen and buttons on the right for Report, Kill, Vent, and Use. There is no keyboard.
- Console (controller) – Use the left stick to move, and buttons like X (report), Square (kill), Triangle (vent), etc. You can also use a keyboard on some consoles (Xbox, PlayStation) if you plug one in, but the game may not support full keyboard controls.
If you are playing on PC with a controller, the game automatically uses controller prompts. You can switch between keyboard and controller at any time, but you cannot use both simultaneously for different actions.
Advanced Tips for Keyboard Users
Mastering keyboard controls can give you an edge:
- Use Shift to run – In the PC version, holding Shift makes your character run faster. This is not the default in the original release, but it is a common feature in the current versions. Check your settings to see if “Shift to Run is enabled.
- Quick report – If you find a body, press E immediately. Do not walk around it; stand on it and press E. Practice this to react faster.
- Vent hopping – As Impostor, you can move between vents by pressing Spacebar to enter, then using the arrow keys to select an adjacent vent and pressing Spacebar again. This is faster than walking.
- Task efficiency – Use Tab to see your tasks and plan the shortest route. Press E to interact with task panels; some tasks require you to press E multiple times.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I remap keys in Among Us?
A: No official key remapping exists in the game. You can use third-party software like AutoHotkey or your keyboard’s software to swap keys, but the game itself does not allow it.
Q: How do I report a body on PC?
A: Walk directly over the dead body and press E. You must be close enough that the “Report prompt appears. If you are in a vent, you cannot report.
Q: What is the kill button on PC?
A: The kill button is Q. You must be an Impostor, near a crewmate, and the cooldown must be zero. The button is also shown on the bottom right of the screen.
Q: How do I use vents as Impostor?
A: Stand on a vent and press Spacebar to enter. While inside, use the arrow keys or WASD to move to a connected vent, then press Spacebar again to exit. Crewmates cannot use vents.
Q: Why is my keyboard not working in Among Us?
A: Ensure the game window is focused. If you have a controller connected, it might override keyboard input. Also, check that your keyboard is not in “sticky mode and that you have not accidentally enabled “Filter Keys in Windows.
Q: Can I use a keyboard on mobile or console?
A: On mobile, you cannot use a physical keyboard for gameplay (only for chat). On console, you can plug in a keyboard for chat, but the game controls are designed for controller.
