All the Forge Locations in Valheim

This article lists every Forge location in Valheim, covering the three main types: the standard Forge, the Artisan Table, and the Black Forge. You can build the standard Forge at your base after unlocking it, while the Artisan Table and Black Forge are found in specific biomes and must be repaired or built at fixed locations.

Standard Forge Locations

The standard Forge is a craftable station, not a fixed world location. You can build it anywhere you have a workbench and the required materials. To unlock the Forge recipe, you must first obtain Coal (from smelting ore or killing Surtlings) and Bronze (crafted from Copper and Tin). Once you have these, the Forge becomes available in your build menu under the Crafting tab.

  • Materials needed: 10 Wood, 4 Stone, 6 Coal, 5 Bronze
  • Where to build: Anywhere a Workbench is placed, but it must be under a roof and have enough space for upgrades.
  • Upgrades: The Forge can be upgraded with a Forge Cooler, Forge Tool Rack, and Grinding Wheel, which increase its level and allow crafting higher-tier items.

There is no fixed “forge location” in the world for the standard Forge—it is entirely player-built. However, you will often find abandoned structures in the Meadows or Black Forest that contain a Forge, but these are non-functional and cannot be used until you build your own.

Artisan Table Locations

The Artisan Table is a special crafting station used to create end-game items like the Spinning Wheel, Blast Furnace, and the Wisp Torch. It is not a fixed world location either; you must craft it at your base. The recipe unlocks after you defeat Moder, the fourth boss, and obtain her trophy.

  • Materials needed: 10 Wood, 2 Dragon Tear (dropped by Moder)
  • Where to build: Anywhere, but it does not require a workbench nearby.
  • Function: It is used to craft the aforementioned structures and also the Artisan Table itself, which is needed for the Spinning Wheel and Blast Furnace.

While the Artisan Table is not a world location, you will find Dragon Tear only from Moder’s altar in the Mountain biome, so the table is effectively locked behind that boss.

Black Forge Locations

The Black Forge is a unique crafting station found only in the Infested Mines of the Mistlands biome. Unlike the standard Forge, you cannot build it from scratch at your base. Instead, you must locate an existing Black Forge inside an Infested Mine and repair it using 10 Black Marble and 5 Copper. Once repaired, it becomes usable and can be upgraded with a Black Forge Cooler and Black Forge Tool Rack.

  • Where to find: Infested Mines are underground structures found in the Mistlands, often guarded by Seekers and Ticks.
  • Repair materials: 10 Black Marble, 5 Copper
  • Function: Used to craft Mistlands-tier gear such as the Carapace Armor, Krom, and the Mistwalker sword.

Each Infested Mine contains exactly one Black Forge. Once you repair it, it is permanently available at that location, but you cannot move it. You must either build a base around it or travel to it every time you need to craft Mistlands items.

How to Find Infested Mines

Infested Mines are not marked on the map. You must explore the Mistlands biome, which is characterized by a thick, magical mist that reduces visibility. To navigate effectively, you need a Wisp (crafted from a Wisp Light) or a Wisp Torch to clear the mist around you. Look for large rock formations with a dark entrance—these are the mines. They are often surrounded by hostile creatures, so come prepared with good armor and weapons.

  • Tip: Use the Wishbone (from Bonemass) to detect hidden entrances, as some mines are partially buried.
  • Tip: Bring a pickaxe to break through Black Marble barriers inside the mine.

Common Problems and Misconceptions

A common misconception is that the standard Forge can be found in the world and used without building. In Valheim, all crafting stations are player-built; world structures are decorative and non-functional. Another issue players face is not being able to repair the Black Forge because they lack Black Marble—this material is only found in the Mistlands, so you must gather it before entering the mine. Also, the Black Forge cannot be upgraded to level 2 unless you have the Black Forge Cooler and Black Forge Tool Rack, which require additional Black Marble and Iron.

Comparing the Forges

Each forge serves a distinct progression tier:

  • Standard Forge: Tier 1-2 (Bronze, Iron, Silver) – buildable anywhere.
  • Artisan Table: Tier 3 (end-game non-weapon items) – buildable after Moder.
  • Black Forge: Tier 4 (Mistlands gear) – fixed world location, must be repaired.

The Black Forge is the only one that is a fixed world location, making it a strategic point for bases in the Mistlands.

Safety and Preparation

When venturing into Infested Mines, always bring a Wisp to see through the mist, a Pickaxe for Black Marble, and a Bonemass power for resistance to physical damage. The mines are infested with Seekers that can deal heavy damage, so use a shield and a one-handed weapon for better blocking. Also, be aware that the Black Forge repair requires you to be near it, so clear the area of enemies before attempting to repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I move the Black Forge to my base?

No, the Black Forge cannot be moved. It is fixed to its location in the Infested Mine. You must either build a base around it or travel to it whenever you need to craft Mistlands items.

Do I need a Forge to craft Bronze?

Yes, you need a Forge to craft Bronze from Copper and Tin. You also need a Forge to craft Iron items from Iron Scraps, and Silver items from Silver Ore.

Where is the Artisan Table?

The Artisan Table is not a world location; you build it at your base after defeating Moder. It requires 10 Wood and 2 Dragon Tear.

Can I repair a broken Forge in the world?

No, the forges you see in abandoned structures are decorative and cannot be repaired. Only the Black Forge in Infested Mines can be repaired, and it requires specific materials.

What is the best location for a base with a Black Forge?

The best location is near an Infested Mine, but you must first clear the mine of enemies and secure the area. Build a small outpost with a workbench and a portal to easily access the Black Forge.
