Air Force PT Calculator: Estimate Your Fitness Score

The Air Force PT calculator estimates your Physical Training (PT) test score based on your performance in the standard components: push-ups, sit-ups, and a 1.5-mile run. You enter your sex, age, and raw scores (number of reps and run time), and the calculator returns a composite score on the Air Force’s 0–100 scale, along with the rating category (e.g., Excellent, Good, Satisfactory).

Formula

The Air Force PT test uses a point system where each component (push-ups, sit-ups, and the 1.5-mile run) is scored from 0 to 100 based on your sex and age group. The composite score is the average of the three component scores:

Composite Score = (Push-up Score + Sit-up Score + Run Score) / 3

Each component score is determined by a lookup table that maps your raw performance (reps or time) to a point value. For example, a 25-year-old male doing 40 push-ups might earn 80 points, while a 45-year-old female running 14:00 might earn 70 points. The exact tables are published in Air Force Instruction 36-2905 and change periodically, so the calculator must use the current version to be accurate.

Worked Example

Using the default values from the calculator above (Male, age 25, 40 push-ups, 45 sit-ups, run time 12:30):

  1. Convert run time to minutes: 12 + 30/60 = 12.5 minutes.
  2. Look up component scores (based on the 2020 AFI tables):
    • Push-ups: 40 reps for a 25-year-old male = 80 points
    • Sit-ups: 45 reps for a 25-year-old male = 75 points
    • Run: 12:30 for a 25-year-old male = 85 points
  3. Average: (80 + 75 + 85) / 3 = 80.0

The composite score is 80.0, which falls in the “Good” category (75.0–89.9). The calculator above uses the same logic, but the actual point values may vary slightly depending on the version of the scoring tables you use.

How the Air Force PT Test Is Scored

The Air Force Physical Fitness Test consists of three events: push-ups (1 minute), sit-ups (1 minute), and a 1.5-mile run. Each event is scored on a 0–100 scale based on your sex and age group. The composite score is the average of the three, and it determines your overall fitness category:

  • Excellent: 90.0–100
  • Good: 75.0–89.9
  • Satisfactory: 60.0–74.9
  • Unsatisfactory: Below 60.0

You must also meet minimum thresholds in each component; failing any one event can result in an overall failure regardless of the composite score. The calculator helps you see where you stand and what you need to improve.

How to Use the Calculator Correctly

To get an accurate estimate, follow these steps:

  1. Enter your sex and age (as of the test date).
  2. Enter your push-up and sit-up counts from a 1-minute effort.
  3. Enter your 1.5-mile run time in minutes and seconds.
  4. Read the composite score and compare it to the rating categories.

Be honest with your numbers—if you round up your reps or shave off run time, the estimate will be too high. For the most accurate result, use a recent PT test or a practice test under official conditions.

Common Mistakes and Misconceptions

One common mistake is mixing up the run time format. The calculator expects minutes and seconds, but some people enter total seconds or use a decimal for seconds (e.g., 12.5 for 12:30). Always enter minutes and seconds separately.

Another misconception is that the composite score is simply the average of raw reps and run time. That is incorrect—each component is first converted to a point score using the official tables. The raw numbers themselves are not averaged.

Also, the scoring tables differ by sex and age group. A 30-year-old female and a 30-year-old male will not get the same points for the same performance. The calculator accounts for this, but only if you enter the correct sex and age.

Limitations of the Calculator

This calculator uses the most recent publicly available scoring tables, but the Air Force periodically updates the standards. Always verify your score with the current Air Force Instruction or your unit’s fitness assessment cell. The calculator also does not account for alternate events (e.g., swimming or cycling) that some members may use in place of the run, nor does it include the waist measurement component that was part of older tests. For a full official assessment, refer to the latest AFI 36-2905.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a passing score on the Air Force PT test?

A composite score of 75.0 or higher is required to pass. Scores between 60.0 and 74.9 are considered “Satisfactory” but still failing, and below 60.0 is “Unsatisfactory.” You must also meet minimum scores in each component; failing any one event can result in an overall failure.

How often is the Air Force PT test administered?

Active-duty Airmen typically take the test once or twice a year, depending on their fitness level and deployment status. Those who score Excellent may test annually, while others may test every six months. Reserves and Guard follow similar schedules.

Does the calculator work for the new 2025 scoring standards?

The calculator is based on the latest available tables, but the Air Force occasionally updates the standards. Always check the current AFI or consult your fitness unit for the most up-to-date scoring. The calculator gives a good estimate, but it is not an official source.

Can I use this calculator for the Navy or Army PT tests?

No, each branch has its own scoring system. The Navy uses a different set of events and standards, and the Army uses the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT). This calculator is specifically for the Air Force PT test.

What if I do the alternate cardio (bike or swim) instead of the run?

This calculator only handles the 1.5-mile run. Alternate cardio events have separate scoring tables and are not included here. If you use an alternate event, consult the official AFI for the appropriate scoring.
