Age Calculator Based on DOB: How It Works
The calculator for this page is switched off while it is checked. The formula is below, and the worked example in the article shows how to use it by hand.
An age calculator based on date of birth (DOB) works out how much time has passed between your birth date and a date you choose, usually today. Enter the birth date and, if needed, a comparison date; the result is your age in completed years, often with months and days as well.
Formula
Age in completed years = comparison year − birth year − 1 if the birthday has not yet occurred in the comparison year; otherwise, subtract 0. In the calculator expression, the comparison month and day are combined as cmonth * 100 + cday and compared with the birth month and day combined as bmonth * 100 + bday. The comparison is true (represented as 1) when the birthday is still ahead, and false (0) when it has arrived or passed.
byear, bmonth, bday: birth year, month (1–12), and day of month.cyear, cmonth, cday: year, month (1–12), and day of the date being checked.age: completed years at the comparison date.
This compact calculator returns whole completed years. It does not validate whether a date exists, so enter a real calendar date and ensure the comparison date is not before the birth date. The default values are 1 January 1990 and 4 November 2026.
Worked Example
Using exactly the defaults above:
- Birth date: 1 January 1990. Comparison date: 4 November 2026.
- Subtract the years: 2026 − 1990 = 36.
- Compare month and day: November 4 is later in the year than January 1, so the birthday has occurred. The adjustment is 0.
- Completed age: 36 − 0 = 36 years.
The calculator’s first result is therefore 36 completed years.
What an Age Calculator Based on DOB Tells You
A DOB-based age calculator counts completed anniversaries of your birth. If you were born on 20 December 2000 and check your age on 4 November 2026, you are 25, not 26: your 26th birthday has not yet occurred. On 20 December 2026, the completed-years result becomes 26.
Some calculators show a more detailed elapsed age, such as years, months, and days. That format describes the interval between two calendar dates, while a whole-number result answers the everyday question “How old are you?” A person can also express age as a duration in days, weeks, or hours, but those figures are not interchangeable with completed calendar years. Years have different lengths because of leap years, and months have different numbers of days.
How to Calculate Age by Hand
To find whole-year age without a tool, subtract the birth year from the year you are checking. Then compare the month and day of the check date with the month and day of birth. If the birthday is later in the calendar year, subtract one; if it is the same day or has passed, keep the difference.
- Birth date: 15 August 1998; check date: 10 August 2026. The birthday is five days away, so the age is 27.
- Birth date: 15 August 1998; check date: 15 August 2026. The birthday is today, so the age is 28.
- Birth date: 15 August 1998; check date: 16 August 2026. The birthday has passed, so the age is 28.
For age in years, months, and days, calculate the interval using the calendar rather than treating each month as 30 days. If the check day is earlier than the birth day, one month must be borrowed from the preceding month, whose length may be 28, 29, 30, or 31 days. This is why a detailed result depends on the dates and the calculator’s calendar convention.
Leap-Day Birthdays and Date Conventions
Someone born on 29 February has a birthday date that appears only in leap years. In non-leap years, calculators and institutions may treat the relevant birthday as 28 February or 1 March, depending on their rules and the purpose of the calculation. There is no single convention that should be assumed for every administrative or legal context. If an exact official age matters, check the rule used by the relevant organization or jurisdiction.
A standard Gregorian calendar calculator also assumes the dates are entered in that calendar. Historical dates, calendars used in different cultures, and time-zone or birth-time questions may require a more specialized method. For ordinary age in years, the calendar date is usually sufficient; time of birth is generally not needed.
Common Errors and Limits
- Forgetting the birthday adjustment: Year subtraction alone can overstate age by one before the birthday.
- Entering month and day in the wrong fields: Formats such as 04/11/2000 can mean 4 November or April 11 depending on the convention. Use clearly labeled fields or an unambiguous date format.
- Using an invalid date: A date such as 31 April does not exist. The simple formula block does not perform calendar validation.
- Confusing elapsed time with age: Dividing the number of days alive by 365 will not always give the same completed age, because leap years and calendar anniversaries matter.
- Checking the wrong reference date: A calculator that uses today’s date changes its answer over time. For a past or future age, enter that specific comparison date.
The calculator gives a mathematical calendar-age result, not a determination of eligibility, identity, or an official age category. Rules can differ where a form or institution defines age in a particular way.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my age from my date of birth?
Subtract your birth year from the year of the date you are checking. If your birthday has not happened yet that year, subtract one more.
Is age calculated from the date of birth or the time of birth?
For ordinary age in completed years, it is calculated from the calendar date of birth. Time of birth is normally unnecessary, though a specialized calculation involving exact elapsed hours would need it and a time-zone reference.
How old am I if my birthday is today?
Your age increases by one completed year on your birthday. A calculator should include that year when the comparison date matches your birth month and day.
How is age calculated for someone born on 29 February?
The elapsed calendar years are straightforward, but a non-leap-year birthday may be observed on 28 February or 1 March under different conventions. Check the relevant organization’s rule if the distinction matters.
Can an age calculator show my age in days?
Many tools can calculate days between two dates, but that is a different result from completed age in years. A precise day count depends on the calendar dates and, for exact elapsed time, potentially time zones and times of day.
