Add New Line WeChat: Quick Fix for PC & Phone

To add a new line in WeChat, press Shift+Enter on a PC or Enter on a mobile device while typing in a chat. On Android and iOS, the Enter key on the keyboard inserts a line break instead of sending the message, while on desktop you need Shift+Enter because a plain Enter sends the message.
Formula
The calculator works out your average pace and speed from a finish time and distance. The formulas are:
- Pace (min/km) = Finish time (minutes) ÷ Distance (kilometres)
- Speed (km/h) = Distance (kilometres) ÷ (Finish time (minutes) ÷ 60)
Where:
- Finish time (t) – the total time taken, in minutes.
- Distance (d) – the distance covered, in kilometres.
- Pace – the time it takes to cover one kilometre, in minutes per kilometre.
- Speed – the average speed, in kilometres per hour.
Pace is the standard metric for runners and walkers: lower pace means faster. Speed is more common for cyclists and drivers.
Worked Example
Using the default values from the calculator: finish time = 50 minutes, distance = 10 km.
- Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km
- Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h
The calculator returns a pace of 5.00 min/km and a speed of 12.00 km/h.
How to Add a New Line in WeChat on Mobile
On both Android and iPhone, the keyboard’s Enter or Return key inserts a line break. It does not send the message. To send, you tap the blue Send button next to the text field.
- iPhone (iOS): The Return key on the default keyboard adds a new line. If you use a third-party keyboard like Gboard or SwiftKey, the Enter key may send instead – check the keyboard settings.
- Android: The Enter key on most keyboards (Gboard, Samsung Keyboard) adds a line break. Some keyboards have a send key that you can change in the keyboard settings.
If pressing Enter sends the message instead of adding a line, go to your keyboard’s settings and look for an option like “Enter key action or “Send key and set it to “New line or “Enter.
How to Add a New Line in WeChat on PC (Windows and Mac)
On the WeChat desktop app, a plain Enter sends the message. To insert a line break, press Shift+Enter. This works on both Windows and macOS.
If you prefer Enter to add a new line and Ctrl+Enter to send, you can change that in WeChat’s settings:
- Click the gear icon (Settings) at the bottom left of the WeChat window.
- Go to General (or “Shortcuts depending on version).
- Find the option “Press Enter to send message and uncheck it.
- After that, Enter adds a new line and Ctrl+Enter sends the message.
On the web version (web.wechat.com), the same rule applies: Shift+Enter for a new line, Enter to send.
Why Can’t I Add a New Line?
If Shift+Enter or Enter doesn’t work, check these common issues:
- Keyboard language: If you have a non-English keyboard layout, the Shift key might not work as expected. Switch to English or check the key mapping.
- Third-party keyboards on mobile: Some keyboards replace Enter with a send button. Change the keyboard’s “Enter key action to “New line.
- WeChat version: Older versions of WeChat may not support line breaks in certain fields (like status updates). Update the app.
- Using a browser extension: Some browser extensions can interfere with the web version. Try incognito mode or disable extensions.
Line Breaks in Status, Moments, and Notes
In WeChat Moments (朋圈), you can add line breaks by pressing Enter on mobile or Shift+Enter on PC. However, the app may collapse multiple line breaks into a single space when posting. To force a line break in Moments, some users type a space or a punctuation mark at the end of the first line.
In WeChat’s built-in note-taking feature (WeChat Notes), you can use Enter on mobile and Shift+Enter on PC. The same applies to the “File Transfer chat – you can send yourself multi-line messages.
Copying and Pasting Multi-Line Text
If you have a long text with line breaks from another app, pasting it into WeChat usually preserves the line breaks. If it doesn’t, paste it into a plain text editor first (like Notepad) and then copy again. On PC, you can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+V to paste, and the line breaks should be kept.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Enter key send the message on mobile?
On some Android keyboards, the Enter key is replaced by a send icon. You can change this in the keyboard’s settings. For example, in Gboard, go to Settings → Preferences → Enter key action and choose “New line. On iOS, the default keyboard always has a Return key that makes a new line.
Can I use a shortcut to add a new line on WeChat web?
Yes, on the web version, press Shift+Enter to add a line break. Enter sends the message. There is no other shortcut.
How do I add a blank line in WeChat Moments?
Type your first line, then press Enter (or Shift+Enter on PC). If the blank line is not visible, add a period or a space at the end of the previous line. Some versions trim trailing spaces, so you may need to add a full stop.
Does WeChat have a character limit per message?
Yes, a single chat message can be up to 2,000 characters. If you exceed that, you need to split the text into multiple messages. Line breaks count as characters.
Can I send a multi-line message from a computer to a phone?
Yes, you can type a multi-line message on the desktop app using Shift+Enter and send it. The recipient will see the line breaks exactly as you typed them.
Why does my pasted text lose line breaks in WeChat?
This usually happens when copying from a web page or PDF. Copy the text into a plain text editor first (like Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on Mac), then copy again and paste into WeChat. This removes any hidden formatting that may break line breaks.
