Activation Lock on Apple Watch: How It Works

Activation Lock on Apple Watch is a security feature that ties the watch to your Apple ID, so if it’s lost or stolen, no one else can pair it with a new iPhone or use it. You turn it on automatically when you enable Find My on the watch, and it activates the moment you pair the watch with your iPhone. Here’s what you need to know about how it works, how to check it, and how to remove it.

Formula

The calculator works out your average pace and speed from a given finish time and distance. The formulas are:

  • Pace (min/km) = Total time in minutes ÷ Distance in kilometers
  • Speed (km/h) = Distance in kilometers ÷ (Total time in minutes ÷ 60)

Where:

  • t = finish time in minutes (e.g., 50 min)
  • d = distance in kilometers (e.g., 10 km)
  • Pace is expressed as minutes per kilometer (min/km).
  • Speed is expressed as kilometers per hour (km/h).

Worked Example

Using the default values: finish time = 50 minutes, distance = 10 km.

  1. Pace = 50 min ÷ 10 km = 5.00 min/km
  2. Speed = 10 km ÷ (50 min ÷ 60) = 10 km ÷ 0.8333 h = 12.00 km/h

The calculator returns 5.00 min/km and 12.00 km/h, matching the example.

What Activation Lock Does

Activation Lock is part of Apple’s Find My service. When you pair an Apple Watch with your iPhone, the watch is automatically associated with your Apple ID. If you ever need to erase the watch remotely (via Find My) or if someone else tries to pair it, the watch will ask for the original owner’s Apple ID and password. Without that, the watch becomes unusable—it can’t be paired, activated, or used for anything except maybe displaying the lock screen.

This feature is designed to deter theft and make a stolen watch worthless to resell. It’s the same concept as Activation Lock on iPhone and iPad.

How to Check if an Apple Watch Has Activation Lock

If you’re buying a used Apple Watch, you must verify that Activation Lock is off before you pay. Here’s how:

  1. Ask the seller to unpair the watch from their iPhone (this removes Activation Lock).
  2. Alternatively, ask them to go to the Watch app on their iPhone → All Watches → tap the info button (i) → and check if “Find My Watch” is off.
  3. When you first pair the watch with your iPhone, if it asks for the previous owner’s Apple ID password, then Activation Lock is still on.

Never buy a watch that still shows Activation Lock, because only the original owner can remove it.

How to Remove Activation Lock from Your Own Watch

If you’re the owner and you want to sell or give away your Apple Watch, you need to turn off Activation Lock. Do this:

  1. Keep the watch paired to your iPhone.
  2. In the Watch app on iPhone, go to All Watches, tap the info button next to your watch.
  3. Tap “Unpair Apple Watch.” This will erase the watch and disable Activation Lock.
  4. If you don’t have your iPhone, you can go to iCloud.com/find, select the watch, and click “Erase Apple Watch.” After it erases, click “Remove from Account.”

Once removed, the watch can be paired with a new iPhone without any password prompt.

Common Problems and Misconceptions

  • “I forgot my Apple ID password.” You can reset it via iforgot.apple.com, but you’ll need access to your trusted phone number or email. If you can’t reset, Activation Lock cannot be removed by anyone else.
  • “The seller says they’ll remove it after I pay.” Don’t rely on that. Only buy if the watch is already unpaired and shows no lock.
  • “Activation Lock is the same as a passcode.” No. A passcode is a numeric code you enter to unlock the watch. Activation Lock is a separate, Apple-ID-based lock that prevents re-pairing.
  • “Can Apple remove it for me?” Apple can only remove Activation Lock if you provide proof of purchase and the original Apple ID is unavailable. This is a lengthy process and not guaranteed.

How Activation Lock Differs on GPS vs. Cellular Models

Both GPS and cellular Apple Watch models have Activation Lock. However, cellular models also have an additional layer: they’re locked to the carrier’s network until the carrier releases them. If you buy a used cellular watch, you may also need to contact the carrier to unlock it from the previous owner’s account. Activation Lock is separate from carrier lock, but both must be cleared for full use.

What to Do If You Bought a Watch with Activation Lock

If you accidentally bought a locked watch, here are your options:

  • Contact the seller and ask them to unpair it remotely using iCloud.com/find.
  • If the seller is unresponsive, you have no legal way to bypass Activation Lock. It’s a security feature, not a bug.
  • You can sell it for parts (some repair shops buy locked watches for components).
  • Always check before buying—this is the only real prevention.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does resetting the Apple Watch remove Activation Lock?

No. A factory reset (Erase All Content and Settings) does not remove Activation Lock. The watch will still be linked to the original Apple ID and will ask for it when pairing. Only unpairing from the owner’s iPhone or removing it from iCloud removes the lock.

Can I use an Apple Watch with Activation Lock as a regular watch?

No. The watch is completely unusable until it’s paired with an iPhone. You can’t even see the time because the setup screen blocks everything.

How long does it take for Activation Lock to disappear after the owner removes it?

It’s usually immediate. Once the owner unpairs the watch or removes it from their iCloud account, the lock is lifted. In some cases, it may take a few minutes for the change to propagate.

Is Activation Lock on Apple Watch always on?

It’s on by default when you pair the watch with your iPhone, as long as Find My is enabled. You can turn off Find My for the watch in the Watch app, but that also disables Activation Lock. It’s not recommended to turn it off.

What if I buy a used Apple Watch and it asks for a previous owner’s Apple ID?

Return it to the seller immediately. You cannot bypass this. The seller must remove the lock themselves. If they can’t, they should refund you.

Does Activation Lock drain the battery?

No. Activation Lock itself doesn’t affect battery life. It’s just a software flag stored on the watch.
