An acreage conversion calculator converts a land area from acres into other area units, such as square feet, square yards, hectares, or square metres. Enter an area in acres to see the equivalent values; the results are mathematical conversions, not a survey of the land.
Formula
Each result is the entered acreage multiplied by the number of that unit in one acre. In symbols:
- Square feet = acres × 43,560
- Square metres = acres × 4,046.8564224
- Hectares = acres × 0.40468564224
- Square miles = acres ÷ 640
Here, acres is the area entered, measured in acres. The outputs are areas in square feet (ft²), square metres (m²), hectares (ha), and square miles (mi²). One acre is defined as exactly 43,560 square feet; the metric equivalents follow from the international foot, which is exactly 0.3048 metres. The square-mile conversion uses 640 acres per square mile.
Worked Example
For the default input of 1 acre:
- Square feet: 1 × 43,560 = 43,560.00 ft².
- Square metres: 1 × 4,046.8564224 = 4,046.86 m².
- Hectares: 1 × 0.40468564224 = 0.4047 ha.
- Square miles: 1 ÷ 640 = 0.001563 mi².
For a larger example, 5 acres equal 217,800 square feet, about 2.0234 hectares, or 0.007813 square miles. The calculator applies the same fixed factors to any nonnegative acreage.
What an Acre Measures
An acre is a unit of area, not a unit of length. It is used especially for land in the United States and is also familiar in some other countries. The unit does not prescribe a particular shape. A square acre would have sides of about 208.71 feet, but a parcel with an acre of area could instead be long and narrow, irregular, or divided into separate pieces.
That distinction matters when estimating dimensions. Knowing that a parcel contains one acre does not tell you how long its boundary is, how wide it is, or how much fencing it needs. Those questions require its shape or boundary measurements. For a rectangle, area is length multiplied by width; for an irregular parcel, use a reliable map or survey rather than assuming it is square.
How to Use the Conversion
Enter the area as a number of acres, then read the unit you need from the corresponding result. The default value is 1 acre, which makes the conversion factors easy to check. For example, enter 2.5 to convert two and a half acres; the square-foot result is 108,900 ft², and the hectare result is about 1.0117 ha.
Choose the output unit that matches the task. Square feet or square metres are useful for smaller plots and building plans; hectares are common in metric land descriptions; and square miles express much larger areas. Keep the original figure and unit with any converted value so that another reader can tell what was converted.
Common Conversions and Mistakes
Some useful reference values are:
- 1 acre = 43,560 ft².
- 1 acre = 4,840 square yards.
- 1 acre = 0.40468564224 hectares, approximately 4,046.86 m².
- 640 acres = 1 square mile.
A frequent error is confusing square units with linear units. Since area is two-dimensional, converting feet to metres is not enough: the conversion factor must be squared. Another common mistake is mixing acres and hectares. A hectare is larger than an acre; one hectare is about 2.471 acres, not 0.4047 acres. The latter number is the number of hectares in one acre.
Rounding can also cause apparent discrepancies. This calculator displays square feet and square metres to two decimal places, hectares to four, and square miles to six. The underlying conversion factors are more precise than the displayed values. Calculations based on rounded intermediate results may differ slightly from calculations that retain full precision, so round only the final answer when accuracy matters.
Accuracy and Limits
These are unit conversions, not measurements. Their accuracy cannot exceed the accuracy of the acreage you enter. If a source says “about 3 acres,” displaying a converted result to many decimal places does not make the source measurement more precise.
Parcel acreage can vary among estimates, maps, and survey records because boundaries and measurement methods differ. A calculator cannot determine which boundary is legally or practically relevant, nor account for easements, slopes, excluded areas, or a parcel’s exact shape. For a property decision that depends on the measured boundary, consult an appropriate survey or authoritative parcel record.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many square feet are in an acre?
One acre contains exactly 43,560 square feet. This fixed conversion does not depend on the parcel’s shape.
How many hectares are in an acre?
One acre is 0.40468564224 hectares, usually rounded to 0.4047 ha. Conversely, one hectare is about 2.471 acres.
Is an acre always a square?
No. An acre describes area, not shape. A square acre would be about 208.71 feet on each side, but land with the same area can have many other shapes.
How do I convert square feet to acres?
Divide the number of square feet by 43,560. For example, 87,120 ft² ÷ 43,560 = 2 acres.
Why does my converted result differ slightly from another calculator?
The other result may use a different display precision or round intermediate values. Check that both calculations start with the same acreage and use the same units, then compare unrounded conversion factors.
