This calculator finds your average speed in miles per hour. Enter the distance in miles and the time in hours and minutes, and you get mph, km/h, metres per second and the time per mile.
Formula
Speed = distance ÷ time, with time in hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60. km/h = mph × 1.609344; m/s = mph × 0.44704; minutes per mile = 60 ÷ mph.
- d: distance in miles (km ÷ 1.609344)
- h, m: travel time in hours and minutes
Worked Example
150 miles in 2 hours 30 minutes.
- Time = 2 + 30 ÷ 60 = 2.5 h
- Speed = 150 ÷ 2.5 = 60.00 mph
- 60 × 1.609344 = 96.56 km/h; 60 × 0.44704 = 26.82 m/s
- Time per mile = 60 ÷ 60 = 1:00 minute
Limits and common mistakes
- This is the average over the whole time, including stops; moving speed is higher if you stopped.
- Do not enter 2.30 for 2 h 30 min; that is 2 h 18 min. Use the separate minutes field.
- Averages of speeds do not add up: driving out at 30 mph and back at 60 mph averages 40 mph, not 45.
- For running or cycling the time per mile is the pace; at 60 mph it is exactly one minute per mile.
