This calculator turns a 10K finish time into pace and speed. Enter your time in hours, minutes and seconds and you get the pace per kilometre, the pace per mile and the average speed.

Formula

Time in minutes t = hours × 60 + minutes + seconds ÷ 60. Pace per km = t ÷ 10. A 10K is 10 ÷ 1.609344 = 6.2137 miles, so pace per mile = t ÷ 6.2137. Speed = 10 km ÷ (t ÷ 60) hours.

  • t: finish time in minutes
  • 10: race distance in kilometres
  • 1.609344: kilometres in one mile

Worked Example

A 10K run in 52 minutes 30 seconds.

  1. t = 52 + 30 ÷ 60 = 52.5 min (52:30)
  2. Pace per km = 52.5 ÷ 10 = 5.25 min = 5:15 per km
  3. Pace per mile = 52.5 ÷ 6.2137 = 8.449 min = 8:27 per mile
  4. Speed = 10 ÷ 0.875 h = 11.43 km/h

Limits and common mistakes

  • Pace is minutes per distance; 5.25 minutes is 5:15, not 5:25.
  • GPS watches often measure a little more than 10 km on a course, so their pace reads faster than this certified-distance pace.
  • For speed in mph divide km/h by 1.609344.
