Formula

Ounces = grams ÷ 28.349523125. Pounds = grams ÷ 453.59237. Troy ounces = grams ÷ 31.1034768. All three factors are exact definitions.

Limits and common mistakes

  • Fluid ounces measure volume, not weight. 100 g of water is about 3.38 US fl oz, but 100 g of flour is far more by volume.
  • Do not mix the ounce and the troy ounce: a troy ounce is about 10% heavier.
  • For pounds and ounces, take the whole pounds and multiply the remainder by 16.
  • Kitchen scales often round to the nearest gram or 0.1 oz, so 100 g may read 3.5 oz.
  • To convert the other way, multiply ounces by 28.3495 to get grams (4 oz ≈ 113.4 g).
